There is a god at the heart of the wild wood - antlered, ancient, and utterly untamed. He is Cernunnos, the Horned One: Lord of the animals, keeper of the door between the worlds, the green pulse of life that falls each winter and rises each spring. This rattle is shaped in his likeness, and it carries his nature in its own name: Wildheart.

The head itself is cut into the shape of antlers - the crown of the Horned God - with the handle made from deer antler. Twice-horned, then. Twice his. To take it up is to hold the wild god in your hand: the part of you, and of the world, that was never domesticated, never tamed, and never meant to be.

This is a rattle for the one who works at the threshold. Cernunnos is the gatekeeper, and his sound opens the way - down into the greenwood, across into the Otherworld, through to wherever the helping spirits wait. Shake it to call the animal powers near, to break apart what has grown dense and stagnant, to clear and protect a space, or to draw a scattered energy body home. Its voice is the sound of the wild heart, still beating.

Each element is a facet of his medicine:

  • The Antler - both in your hand and rising from the head. Shed each year and grown anew, antler is the great emblem of regeneration and of the crown that reaches toward spirit. It is Cernunnos himself: the branching horns that bridge the rooted earth and the high realms, drawing down what comes from above. Here it is doubled - held and crowned - so the whole tool becomes the god's own crown.

  • Deer - the Horned One's own creature. Soft-footed walker between the seen and the unseen, alert to the faintest tremor in a field, gentle and yet never weak. Its hide, stretched to voice, carries that threshold-sensitivity into every sound the rattle makes.

  • White Rabbit - the one who leads the descent: into the burrow, into the dark, down through the door and into the lower world where Cernunnos keeps his gate. Lunar, quick, endlessly listening, rabbit teaches deep receptivity and the courage to follow the path down. White for purity, for the moon's light on the way in.

  • Quartz filling - the master amplifier, held at the centre and giving the rattle its clear, carrying voice. Whatever intention you set, quartz magnifies it; whatever the sound breaks loose, quartz holds bright the purpose beneath.

No two of my rattles are ever alike, and this one least of all - it was allowed to become what it wished to be, and it came into the world wearing the antlers of the god. It carries the prayers it was made with.

Take up the Wildheart. Wake the wild. Journey well.
